Alison was always taught that she should follow her mother's rule.
Rebellion was not to be considered without the dire result of punishment
in some form. Growing up with a dominating mother who made all decisions and a father who concentrated on his business, left the only child to develop over the years a distinct lack of self confidence. Following the
societal norm, she married as her parents expected of her the proper man
for her station in life. Appearances were all that counted in her mother's
social circles. But who would voice openly the thoughts about what might
be going on behind another's closed doors? Leaving her parents home and
entering her marriage did nothing but exchange emotional domination for
physical. Handed one day, from someone who cared about what they'd
noticed, some indirect advice put her on the road to finally understanding
what she was living with and leads to her ultimately taking her life into
her own hands and escaping truly with the skin of her teeth.
This story is written in such a way that the reader has a feel for what
life must be like for someone with an abusive spouse. Not written in
anything other than plain terms but telling it honestly, makes for a
compelling story. Bravo that Alison took her chance and had the guts to
escape. How wonderful that Fate would lead her to a special little town,
with caring people who wouldn't hide and close their eyes to something
going on in their midst, who would become good friends, just what she'd
needed her entire life.
